Today's blog will be the final one for 2012. And, with only two transactions in MLB on Thursday, it will be the shortest to date! Hideki Matsui, who arrived in the United States with great fanfare after a terrific career in Japan and stamped his Yankees years with an exclamation point as the 2009 World Series MVP, officially announced his retirement on Thursday. At 38 years old, Matsui could no longer play the game of baseball at the level he did for so many years.
- The New York Mets and left-hander Aaron Laffey agreed to a Minor League contract and invited him to Spring Training. Laffey could compete for a job in the bullpen, or provide rotation depth in the Minors.
