 MLB News & Notes

  • The Atlanta Braves and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed on a trade that sends Justin Upton and Chris Johnson to the Braves. The Diamondbacks received Martin Prado, Randall Delgado, Brandon DruryNick Ahmed, and Zeke Spruill going to Arizona. This trade immediately makes the Braves alot better as the organization must keep up with the Washington Nationals. An outfield of Justin Upton, B.J. Upton, and Jayson Heyward  is impressive. As for the Diamondbacks, its a good trade in the long-term, but the current starting outfield they have with Cody Ross, Adam Eaton, and Jason Kubel may be the worst defensive outfield in the majors.
  • The New York Mets and Shawn Marcum agreed to a one-year deal. The Mets are also trying to figure out how to land Michael Bourn. The Mets have a major need in their outfield, which Bourn could fill. The concern with any player that relies on speed would likely decline on the back end of the trade.
  • The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Scott Hairston agreed to a two-year deal. Hairston hit .263 with a career high 20 home runs last year with the New York Mets, but this is a very surprising signing for the Cubs. Hairston provides left-field depth and makes it easier to trade Alfonso Soriano as Epstein & Company continue to gather assets that they can trade away during the season.
  • The Cincinnati Reds GM Walt Jocketty announced that Billy Hamilton will start the season at Triple-A Louisville. Hamilton needs time to learn to play center field and to work on his offense.
  • The Seattle Mariners announced that Jesus Montero will be the starting catcher beginning now. Montero has spent time in Seattle this offseason working with coaches to be prepared when the team gets to spring training.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1955 - In an effort to speed up the game, major league baseball announces a new rule which requires a pitcher to deliver the ball within 20 seconds after taking a pitching position.
