MLB News & Notes

  • The San Francisco Giants and Sergio Romo agreed to a two-year deal. This is no surprise as the Giants had already announced that Romo would be the closer for the Giants in 2013.
  • New York Mets manager Terry Collins left no doubt Wednesday night that Frank Francisco will serve as the Mets' closer. There has been rumors floating around that Bobby Parnell may end up as the Mets closer in 2013, but Collins seems to have faith in Francisco.
  • The New York Mets are still motivated to sign free agent outfielder Michael Bourn, but are adamant about keeping their first-round draft pick. It was reported on Wednesday that the Mets are willing to offer Bourn a four-year deal. Bourn and his agent, Scott Boras, had been seeking a five-year deal. At this point, Bourn is just looking for a team that is willing to offer him more than a one-year deal.
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates and Jonathan Sanchez agreed to a to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Sanchez is coming off a brutal 2012 season in which he posted a 8.07 ERA between the Royals and Rockies. The Pirates will take a chance on Sanchez and allow him to compete for the fifth starter in their rotation.
  • The Tampa Bay Rays and Luke Scott agreed to a one-year deal. He'll be Tampa's regular DH against right-handed pitching.
  • David Ortiz (Achilles) is optimistic that he will be ready for Opening Day. Ortiz has been participating in batting practice and running drills, but the Red Sox plan to ease Ortiz back into the lineup when spring training begins in hope of preventing any further damage to his Achilles.
  • Jim Bowden of ESPN and Sirius/XM Radio sent out a tweet this week that links the Boston Red Sox to Kyle Lohse. After the St. Louis Cardinals announced that Chris Carpenter will miss the entire 2013 season, expect to see the Cardinals jump back in on Lohse as well. Regardless, be assured that Lohse will sign somewhere soon.
  • Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on MLB Network on Wednesday that Scott Rolen will "probably end up some other place than Los Angeles."
  • The Los Angeles Angels and Alberto Callaspo agreed to a two-year deal. Callaspo is the least exciting player in the Angels' starting lineup, but he will continue to keep the seat warm at the hot corner until top prospect Kaleb Cowart makes it to Anaheim.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1958 - The Dodgers officially became the Los Angeles Dodgers.
