California Winter League

  • CWL Playoffs began on Sunday with the quarterfinal round at Palm Springs Stadium.
  • In the first game of the day, the #3 Washington Bluesox defeated and the  #7 British Columbia Bombers 7-3.
  • In game two of the day, the #8 Palm Desert Coyotes had upset on the mind as they took on the #1 Coachella Valley Snowbirds. Coyote hurler Ryan Zimmerman pitched a complete game with fourteen strikeouts allowing just two hits. But, Michael Durham had an RBI single in the fourth inning as the Snowbirds survived and advanced 3-1.
  • In game three of the day, the #2 Palm Springs Power faced the #7 Canada A’s. Jacob Kemmerer threw a complete game shut-out and allowed just three hits as the A’s upset the POWER 1-0.
  • Monday's semifinals set up as follows - #3 Bluesox vs #5 Chill at 9 am and #1 Snowbirds vs #7 Canada A’s at 11:30 am.

MLB News & Notes

  • The Seattle Mariners and Felix Hernandez agreed to a mega deal last week. The $175 million deal over seven years has yet to be signed by either side as an elbow concern developed over the weekend because Hernandez may have failed the physical he was scheduled to take Thursday.
  • The Cleveland Indians and Daisuke Matsuzaka agreed to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training pending a physical. Matsuzaka will be reunited with former Red Sox manager Terry Francona in Cleveland. Last season, Matsuzaka went 1-7 with a 8.28 ERA in 11 starts.
  • The Cleveland Indians and Jason Giambi agreed to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training pending a physical. Giambi is 42 and hasn't had over 200 at-bats since the 2009 season. The Indians could consider him as a left-handed DH.
  • Toronto Blue Jays reliever Sergio Santos (shoulder) confirmed he's ready for the start of spring training. Santos has been throwing for four months, so he is on schedule to be ready for Opening Day.
  • The Los Angeles Dodgers and Kevin Gregg agreed to a minor league deal. Adding Gregg brings the Dodgers non-roster total to 19 players. Gregg will get the opportunity to bolster the Dodgers bullpen.
  • Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond announced that Giancarlo Stanton will bat third in the Marlins order this year because Redmond would like to see Stanton bat in the first inning.
  • The St. Louis Cardinals and David Freese avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal. Freese followed up a World Series MVP season in 2011 with a solid 2012 campaign.
  • The Arizona Diamondbacks and Rod Barajas agreed to a minor league deal.  He will go to spring training and compete with Wil Nieves for a backup job behind Miguel Montero.
  • Former Angel All-Star Clyde Wright will be among the guests this month at the Desert Hot Stove League Luncheon Feb. 19 at Palm Valley Country Club.  All baseball fans are invited and the charge is $20 for the luncheon, which begins at noon. RSVP Pete Donovan at 760.360.0414
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1982 - The San Diego-St. Louis Ozzie Smith for Gary Templeton deal finally goes through, more than two months after it was first announced.
