 MLB News & Notes

  • The Cleveland Indians and Michael Bourn agreed to a four-year deal on Monday. The New York Mets had the exact same offer out to Bourn, but the Mets were told by Major League Baseball that the grievance over retaining their 2013 first-round pick would not have a resolution for 2-3 weeks. Bourn makes the Indians a much faster team on the bases and gives Indians manager Terry Francona several options in the outfield which includes Drew Stubbs, Nick Swisher, and Michael Brantley.  Bourn hit .274 with nine homers, 57 RBI and 42 steals in 155 games last season for the Braves.
  • The Colorado Rockies and Dexter Fowler agreed to a two-year deal. Fowler hit .300 with 13 home runs, 12 stolen bases and 53 RBI in 143 games last season for Colorado. Look for Fowler to have a big 2013.
  • Derek Jeter  ran on a treadmill for the first time since undergoing surgery in October on his left ankle.
  • The Los Angeles Angels announced that Ryan Madson is dealing with soreness in his surgically repaired right elbow. Madson had Tommy John surgery last April and this is the last thing that Madson or the Angels want to hear, but Spring Training is just beginning so he has time to get over the hump.
  • The Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced that Howie Kendrick had offseason elbow surgery in October. Kendrick is 100% heading into Spring Training so it should be a non-issue.
  • The Cincinnati Reds and Shin-Soo Choo avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal. Choo will become a free agent after the 2013 season.
  • St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) said during a press conference Monday that has not ruled out pitching at some point in 2013. Carpenter said that he was throwing about 70% and had no idea where the ball was going during a recent bullpen session. Carpenter seems unwilling to officially retire at this time.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 2002 - For the first time in its history, Major League Baseball owned a team after acquiring the Montreal Expos from Jeffrey Loria. The former Montreal owner sold the Expos for $120 million, then bought the Florida Marlins for $158.5 million with the difference being made up with a loan from major league baseball.
