California Winter League

  • Tuesday was Championship Tuesday at the CWL
  • The Coachella Valley Snowbirds faced the Palm Springs Chill in the championship game of the California Winter League! Seafth Howe started strong for the Snowbirds tossing three scoreless innings. Howe went a complete season without allowing an earned run. The Snowbirds put two runs up in the bottom of the first and scratch across one more run in the bottom of the seventh. That was enough for the Snowbirds to claim the 2013 CWL title with a 3-2 victory!


MLB News & Notes

  • Josh Hamilton reported to Los Angeles Angels camp early weighing 225 pounds, which is 20-30 pounds lighter than his usual reporting weight. Hamilton said that the moderate climate in Los Angeles compared to the humidity in Texas was the reason why he felt he could come to camp lighter than when he was with the Rangers.
  • Clayton Kershaw doesn't want contract negotiations to drag into the season. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said last week that there is "mutual interest" in getting something done, but it appears that nothing will get done soon. Kershaw is under team control through 2014.
  • Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said Tuesday that using Hyun-Jin Ryu as a reliever is unlikely. The Dodgers have eight starters for five rotation spots, but Ryu's spot was basically guaranteed after the Dodgers signed him to a big contract this offseason. Chad Billingsley, Chris Capuano, Aaron Harang and Ted Lilly will battle for the final spot in the rotation.
  • The Seattle Mariners and Felix Hernandez finalized a new seven-year deal.
  • Stephen Strasburg says his goal this season is to pitch 200-plus innings and last deeper into ballgames. There is no discussions this year about an innings limit for Strasburg.
  • Mariano Rivera (knee) is scheduled to throw a light bullpen session Wednesday. Rivera, who is coming back from surgery to repair a torn ACL and the New York Yankees expect him to be ready for Opening Day.
  • Ryan Madson (elbow) had an MRI on Tuesday. The Angels are hopeful that Madson is just dealing with general soreness following Tommy John surgery, but they wanted him to get the MRI just to make sure nothing else is going on.
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates and Brandon Inge agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. If he makes the Pirates Opening Day roster, expect it to be as a utility spot.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1987 - Jack Morris was awarded the highest salary ever given to a pitcher by arbitration. The Tigers had to pay the Morris $1.85 million for his services next season. Morris went on to post an 18-11 record along with an ERA of 3.38 for the AL East Division champions.
