 MLB News & Notes

  • Josh Beckett threw two scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants in Tuesday's Cactus League game. Beckett allowed one hit and one walk while recording three strikeouts. Beckett posted a 2.93 ERA in seven starts for the Dodgers down the stretch last season and is looking to a bounce-back year.
  • Josh Hamilton went hitless in his Cactus League debut as an Angel. He swung at the first pitch he saw on Tuesday and promptly grounded out to shortstop. Hamilton promised hitting coach Jim Eppard he would try not to swing at everything in the strike zone this season, but Hamilton promptly swung at his first pitch.
  • Tim Lincecum seemed to be encouraged about his outing Tuesday despite being hit hard in a 1.1 innings. Lincecum was encouraged because his fastball was clocked around 92-93 MPH. It took Lincecum 38 pitches to get through the 1.1. innings and the overall result was poor on paper.
  • Jedd Gyorko hit his third home run of the spring Tuesday in the Padres' 7-5 defeat of the Reds. Gyorko already has nine RBI in four Cactus League games and he is making a strong case to open the season as the Padres' starting second baseman.
  • Miguel Montero was scratched from a second straight game Tuesday because of a swollen right thumb. It does not appear to be a serious injury so consider Montero day-to-day.
  • As expected, Yankees GM Brian Cashman ruled out a Johnny Damon deal Tuesday. Cashman stated that the Yankees need somebody who can play the outfield every day. Damon is a lousy defensive outfielder and hit just .222 in 2012.
  • Adam Wainwright had a strong outing against the Astros. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings allowing four hits while striking out three against the Astros on Monday. The Cardinals and Wainwright are involved in some level of contract negotiations and it will be interesting to see if the two sides agree on a long-term deal before the season starts.
  • Matt Garza could resume throwing on Thursday. If Garza is able to throw Thursday, he should be ready for Opening Day
  • The Cleveland Indians announced that Justin Masterson will be their Opening Day starter. Masterson proved his durability by starting an AL-leading 34 games last season.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1912 - The New York Yankees announced that they would be wearing pinstripes on their uniforms. It took a few seasons (April 22, 1915) before the vertical lines became a reality.
