 MLB News & Notes

  • Dan Uggla said he was fine after leaving Tuesday's game following a hit by pitch in the back of the neck. This is good news after Uggla was removed for precautionary reasons, but it sounds like he won't even require concussion tests.
  • Albert Pujols (knee) was hitless in three at-bats during his Cactus League debut Tuesday.
  • Mike Scioscia said on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM on Tuesday that Ryan Madson (elbow) will be ready sometime around mid-April. Madson is currently working his way back from Tommy John surgery and  is working slowly after a setback earlier this month. The Angels hope Madson can resume throwing off a mound within the next few days.
  • Zack Greinke skipped a bullpen session Sunday due to minor forearm tightness. Greinke has dealt with this type of thing in the past so he should be ready to go in a couple days.
  • Clayton Kershaw gave up four runs on seven hits in three innings in Tuesday's loss to the Padres.Kershaw now has a 9.00 ERA in the eight innings he has pitched, but all that matters is that Kershaw's hip does not seem to be bothering him.
  • Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer reports that there is "nothing to" reports of trade interest in Carlos Marmol, "especially with Detroit." It backs up Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune's report that this is all speculation at this time. The Tigers are in need of bullpen help and are just kicking some tires right now.
  • Mark Teixeira felt discomfort in his right wrist after a few light swings and will be shut down for at least two weeks. Teixeira is headed back to New York for more tests, and it sounds like the injury could be serious.
  • Mariano Rivera (knee) will make his spring debut Saturday against the Braves. The Yankees are ready to let him see game action for the first time since tearing his ACL last May.
  • Starlin Castro (hamstring) did some running and took ground balls Tuesday. Castro's hamstring is not bothering him anymore, but the Cubs will hold him out of game action until next week to be safe.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1987 - Free agent Andre Dawsonsigned a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs for the bargain-basement price of $650,000. Dawson had offered to sign a contract with the dollar amount left blank just so he could play on the natural grass at Wrigley Field and save his fragile knees. He hit 49 home runs, lead the majors in RBIs, and won the 1987 N.L. MVP Award.
