 MLB News & Notes

  • David Waldstein of the New York Times reports that the New York Yankees have tried to convince Derrek Lee to come out of retirement to play first base while Mark Teixeira (wrist) is out. Teixeira is expected to miss up to ten weeks with this injury and the Yankees have to be realizing that he may need surgery sometime soon.
  • Albert Pujols (knee) hit his first home run of the spring on Saturday. Pujols has been advised to take it easy this spring so he will not play first base for a couple more weeks.
  • Tommy Hanson was charged with five earned runs in three innings in Sunday's loss to the Royals. Hanson now has a 10.80 ERA this spring.
  • Ken Gurnick of wrote that Ted Lilly might be "in position to initially be the fifth starter" for the Dodgers. One of the concerns the Dodgers have about Lilly is his ability to convert to a relief role.
  • Jedd Gyorko's transition from third to second base continues to go well. Gyorko's focus is his footwork and fundamentals up the middle and with Logan Forsythe dealing with plantar fasciitis, it further opens the door for Gyorko to find a permanent role with the Padres this spring.
  • David Ortiz will be shut down 5-7 days after an MRI on both heels revealed inflammation in the bony area of his right heel, manager John Farrell said Sunday afternoon. Farrell went on to say that its doubtful that Ortiz will likely not be ready for Opening Day.
  • Finally some good news for the New York Yankees happened over the weekend. Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter played for the first time since their injuries last season. Rivera threw 15 pitches and Jeter lead of the first inning with a single in his first spring training at bat.
  • Matt Garza (lat) will resume a throwing program on Wednesday.
  • Manny Machado (mouth) returned to the Orioles lineup Sunday after having root canal surgery. The Orioles and Machado wanted to get this out of the way in spring training so it would not be a factor in the regular season.
  • Since Dale Sveum became the Cubs manager, he holds a bunting contest in spring training for  Cubs players and management. David DeJesus won the Cubs' annual bunting contest. DeJesus beat out the Cubs video assistant, Nate Halm, for this great title.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1958 - American League batters were required to wear batting helmets. The safety head gear had been mandatory in the National League since 1954.
