 MLB News & Notes

  • Johan Santana has re-torn the anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder and could be heading for career-ending surgery. Santana started feeling discomfort in his shoulder, which prompted the latest MRI and that revealed the tear. He suffered the same injury in September of 2010 and missed the entire 2011 season. No pitcher has had this surgery twice.
  • David Ortiz (heels) has picked up the pace of his rehab this week. If he doesn't have any setbacks, Ortiz could rejoin the Red Sox as soon as mid-April. More likely, though, is that it will be closer to May.
  • Kyle Lohse threw 3 2/3 innings against the Colorado Rockies in his Brewers' debut Thursday. Lohse threw the ball well considering this was his first outing of spring training. He gave up one run and did not surrender any free passes.
  • Michael Morse belted his ninth home run of the spring in a 6-4 win over the Cubs on Thursday. Morse has been locked in all spring following a tough 2012 campaign that was riddled with injuries. Morse will provide the middle of the order power the Mariners have lacked in recent seasons.
  • Nick Hundley will open the season as the Padres' starting catcher while Yasmani Grandal serves his 50 game suspension. Hundley hit .375 with three home runs, 10 RBI, and six runs in 48 Cactus League at-bats.
  • Evan Longoria went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and two walks in Thursday's exhibition game against the Orioles. He has been able to play on a regular basis the last few weeks and his power is starting to come.
  • Ryan Madson (elbow) will travel with the Angels on the team's season-opening road trip. It would be very surprising if Madson actually pitches on the trip, but he is making good progress and is close enough to a return that traveling with the team makes sense.
  • The Baltimore Orioles placed Chris Tillman on the 15-day disabled list with a left abdominal strain. This move is retroactive to March 22nd and Tillman is expected to pitch on April 6 unless he experiences a setback.
  • The Giants have extended the contracts of manager Bruce Bochy and general manager Brian Sabean through 2016. Well deserved after two World Championships for the city by the bay.
  • THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1997 - Chipper Jones and Malley's Chocolates announced the introduction of the Chipper Jones Candy Bar. On a team full of marketable stars, the 24-year-old Atlanta Braves third baseman is the first member of the club to get his own candy bar.
