Paul Goldschmidt Pure Gold in April

Share

Paul Goldschmidt hit his fifth home run of the season on Thursday night in the Diamondbacks 3-2 victory over the Rockies.  The homer gave Goldschmidt 18 RBI and 16 runs scored on the year, and he is now hitting .325 through 22 games. What's more impressive, Goldschmidt was hitting .357 against righties. Not only is Goldschmidt giving his fantasy owners solid production, but his hot start is definitely quieting the Goldschmidt's doubters. With Justin Upton now in Atlanta, Goldschmidt is the Diamondbacks' most feared hitter. The first baseman's power stroke has been on full display this week, as he has three extra-base hits and five RBI in his last three games.

 MLB News & Notes

  • Carlos Marmol may just be the Cubs closer - again. Despite surrendering a base hit and issuing a walk, Marmol was able to escape with his second save of the season. Marmol has racked up eight consecutive scoreless innings.
  • Clay Buchholz gave up two runs on six hits while striking out 10 in 7.2 innings in Boston's win over Houston. He improves to 5-0 this year.
  • Matt Garza (lat, arm) is back on schedule and will throw in a game sometime this week. He was scratched from a previous start on Wednesday due to "dead arm".
  • Gio Gonzalez allowed one hit over eight innings, striking out seven Reds hitters. Gonzalez allowed just one hit - a Joey Votto solo home run. Much better
  • Albert Pujols played first base for the first time since April 15th on Thursday. Pujols has really been slowed down this season by plantar fascitis in his left foot.
  • Zack Greinke (collarbone) is scheduled to resume throwing next week. He is still not expected back to the Dodgers rotation until the middle of June, but its good to see Greinke making progress.
  • Anthony Rizzo went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Thursday against the Marlins. Rizzo is now batting .173 this month and could find himself back in the minors if things don't get better soon.
  • Jhoulys Chacin (back) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. Chacin threw from 120 feet on Thursday and reported no problems. He will probably make at least one rehab assignment before returning to the Rockies rotation.
  • Yoenis Cespedes (hand) began a rehab assignment Thursday. It appears that he will return to the A's lineup Sunday.
  • Brian McCann (shoulder, wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Rome on Friday. McCann won't need too many rehab appearances and should be ready to rejoin the Braves' lineup sometime next week.
  • Justin Verlander said he'll be fine for his next start after leaving Thursday's game early with a blister on his right thumb. That is a major relief for the Tigers.
