Rafael Betancourt Exits with Sprained Right Elbow

Share

Rafael Betancourt felt something in his right elbow and left the game as the Rockies lost 5-4  to the Phillies on Thursday night. The Rockies announced after the game that Betancourt has a sprained right elbow and he will have an MRI on Monday. Betancourt left with two outs and the game tied at 4 in the ninth after he gave up a game-tying infield single by Michael Young. Betancourt blew his second save in as many nights. Rex Brothers will once again take over as the Rockies closer. Brothers has just one blown save on the year, and it came in the seventh inning of a game in May. During Betancourt's previous absence from July to just a few days ago, Brothers was a perfect seven-for-seven in save opportunities. He has 11 saves and a 1.51 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings thus far this season. Fantasy owners should go after Brothers if he is avaliable in your league.

 NEWS & NOTES

  • Clayton Kershaw shut out the Marlins for eight innings on Thursday and he continued to lower his from 1.80 to 1.72. Kershaw struck out six Marlins and scattered five hits. Anytime the National League wants to send him the Cy-Young award is fine with me because there is nobody close to this guy right now.
  • David DeJesus appears to be on his way from Chicago via the Washington Nationals to the Tampa Bay Rays. DeJesus was recently claimed on waivers by the Nats from the Cubs earlier this week. DeJesus probably will not even make the trip with the Nats out of Chicago because the Rays have claimed him on waivers. The Rays and Nats have a deadline of today to work out a deal.
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka will start for the Mets on Friday just a few days after being released by the Cleveland Indians who are in desperate need of adding starting pitching depth. Matsuzaka is unlikely to provide any value for fantasy owners.
  • Melky Cabrera (knee) is not expected back this season by the Blue Jays because of a left knee injury. Cabrera has been out since August 2 and hasn't made very much progress. Cabrera  batted .279 with three home runs and 30 RBI in 88 games this season for Toronto.
  • Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his debut with the Dodgers on Thursday. This was his first Major League game since Tommy John surgery last season and with a six run lead to work with on Thursday, there was no drama. The takeaway from his first outing with the Dodgers is that he looked good except for the pony tail that he now has in his beard. Please Wilson, trim the beard.
  • Matt Kemp (ankle) is making modest turns on his sprained left ankle, but manager Don Mattingly called a September return a "best-case scenario". Kemp joins the discussion that includes B.J. Upton as one of the biggest fantasy busts in 2013.
  • Starling Marte (finger) sat out for the fourth consecutive game on Thursday. He's slowly getting closer to returning to the lineup so lets hope Marte returns over the weekend.
  • Jayson Heyward (jaw) isn't expected to return before the end of the regular season. Heyward will not have his jaw wired shut so eating should not be an issue. Its a big blow to a Braves lineup that has struggled to find anyone but Heyward to produce in the lead off spot.
  • Matt Cain "will be all right" after being hit in the right arm with a line drive on Thursday. He shouldn't miss a start due to the injury.
