Share

The L.A. Galaxy overcame a furious second half onslaught by a determined home side and a dubious penalty kick in stoppage time to defeat the home Colorado Rapids 2-1. The win gives Los Angeles 9 points on the season and places the defending champs 6th in the Western Conference, seven points behind first place San Jose.

The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 21st minute on an own goal by the Rapid's Marvell Wynne off a superb Beckham set piece that looked destined for goal. Near the end of the first half, Galaxy DPs linked up again as a Keane through ball found Galaxy Captain Landon Donovan who buried his second goal in as many games to put the Galaxy up 2-0.

The Rapids came out in the second half determined, and scored their first goal in the 63rd minute on a spectacular goal by Omar Cummings, a goal that will get plenty of consideration for goal of the week.

The play of the game came after a dubious penalty call by referee Ramon Hernandez in stoppage time. Galaxy keeper Josh Saunders guessed right, stopping an Omar Cummings penalty, preserving the Galaxy win.

THREE TAKEAWAYS

1. Saunders is officially our guy after that penalty save. Josh earned the points tonight. It was a terrible call, but what a great save. Hats off to you Mr. Saunders. This win is yours. Superb performance.

2. Don't ever underestimate David Beckham set pieces. The first goal was a direct result of a great ball by Becks, and the Galaxy are fortunate to have a game changing weapon like #23.

3. Two in a row. The Galaxy are out of the cellar and have something to build on. This is a long season and hopefully the team has awakened from the early season slump.
